There is something so powerful about being in the presence of people who are doing what they love. It’s as if a unique energy lives there, somehow tucked silently inside the walls. An energy that draws you in and invites you to lift your life to new heights. That is exactly how I feel when I spend a little time inside my best friend, Jacquie’s, grade two classroom. (I blogged about another visit there last year) A couple of weeks ago I popped in for another visit, and it was another profound afternoon, on so many levels.
The activity was music appreciation, and the class unanimously chose their favourite songs, “The Miracle of You” and “My Heart.” It was the same powerful music I had shared with the previous grade two class the year before.
After the students finished up their lunch and everything was packed away they each received a piece of paper with “Paul” written in the middle of the page.
Paul, Paul Luftenegger, a beautiful singer/songwriter I came across just over a year ago. I found his music on one of my favourite radio shows on Hay House Radio. I also had the pleasure of meeting him last spring, and this authentic human being’s light not only shines through his music but in every fiber of his being. Paul’s mission is to inspire global love and kindness, and I was able to witness this unfolding with my camera as I watched the grade two students react to his music.
Once the students were settled, and the expectations for the activity clearly communicated, Paul’s beautiful voice began drifting through the room from an old CD player.
Tiny voices began to join in with Paul’s, and one could feel an immediate shift of energy. The hustle and bustle of the classroom gently slipped into calmness and focus.
I grabbed my camera, and as quietly as I possibly could, I moved around the room observing the children at work. I had photographed a similar scene last year, and it was beautiful to see another group of children learning the lessons of love through music. The first time I heard Paul’s voice, I felt it touch deep in my soul, and I knew it needed to find its way into classrooms.
photographing love at work
I love taking pictures especially when my only goal is to observe life through my lens. It is my favourite kind of photography! It is in these moments where photography is simply about watching a story unfold before me. I feel I am witnessing God at work, in this case through the power of music and soul centered teaching.
Inside this small classroom, so much love surrounded these beautiful and sometimes troubled little souls. Love is at the heart of this class thanks to a teacher who is equally passionate about teaching love as she is empowering her students with academic skills. Paul’s music is one way she shares the love. This soul filled music written and sung by a man whose mission is to inspire global love and kindness. From my angle, it is a beautiful combination.
love in action
I was so honoured to be witnessing and photographing these sacred moments.
As I looked into the eyes of these beautiful souls, I knew the love that was surrounding them was changing them. I saw the changes in their faces. I saw it in their eyes. I felt it in my soul.
Slowly their pages began to transform as their heart and souls poured onto the pages, I witnessed love. The same love I felt when I first heard Paul’s powerful music and the first time I walked into a classroom that housed my best friend.
The words and pictures seem to march confidently from the students’ pencils onto their papers, evidence of the love and peace was highlighted on every page. Each child was so eager to share a little part of themselves, to express what was bubbling inside their hearts.
I took a deep breath and let these special moments vibrate inside of me. I am aware of how moments like these are sacred. I felt God, the Universe, all around me. I quietly gave thanks.
These little people spoke of Paul as if he were a dear friend, and I guess in some way he is. They listen to his music most every day, and they seemed to get his message at the core of who they are. They are learning the words to his songs, and his message of peace and love is gently being etched on their souls. It’s a beautiful thing!!
