Celebrating Gotcha Day with love
Celebrating Gotcha Day with love is an annual tradition in our family. Gotcha Day is the name we use when we refer to the day we adopted our daughters. The day we became a family.
Our oldest was adopted on August 21st in Hunan, China. Her life story began before we met her and we believe it’s our job to honour all the parts of her story. We honour her birth parents, the country of her birth and the deep loss of leaving everything she knew. Therefore every year we pause and celebrate Gotcha Day, the gift of family and the gift of love.
We celebrate this day with our friends and fellow travel mates. Our daughters both born in China and adopted on August 21st in Changsha, Hunan.
Gratitude for the love of family is always at the center of our annual celebrations.
Our celebration is small and intimate. It’s a time to pause and reflect on all that we have been given. To give thanks for lives so rich because we are family and that love resides in all of us.
Each year, we eat Chinese Food, take pictures, and there is usually ice-cream cake. I decorate a little and we share stories and laughter.
Loot Bags from the Loot Bag Lady
This year, after my visit to the Loot Bag Lady, I decided to have her create Gotcha Day “Loot Bags” for the girls.
For the older girls, who will be 18 later this year, she added a loofa, eye-masks, nail files, tiny notepad and pencil crayons.
For my youngest, who is 13, she geared hers toward her love of drawing.
I was thrilled, the girls were thrilled and they looked really pretty on the table.
Gotcha Day is special to all of us. As the girls get older I wonder how much longer this annual gathering will take place, but for now, I am grateful for another year of celebrating Gotcha Day with love and dear friends.
